Nicholas Spagnolett has a few hats. He is best known for his play London Road which won him the Olive Schreiner prize and a Fleur du Cap award. He is also a Python software developer. Last but not least together with partner Edward van Kuik he owns the Alexander Bar, an eccentric cosy bar which also has a small 40 seater theatre upstairs showing some of the best independent theatre and music in Cape Town six nights a week.
Nicholas is a long time resident of Sea Point and London Road is born out of observations and overheard conversations within this unique community. Sea Point has long been a new home for many immigrants, minority groups and marginalized people. Nicholas’ play echoes the realities of those Sea Point families in a state of migration and emigration – looking at what happens to those who choose to stay behind or go some where else.
Nicholas’ second play Special Thanks to Guests from Afar ran at Artscape in 2012 and will travel to the 2013 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.
